For many, many years this was only really ridable on a more robust bike, you certainly wouldn't have wanted to take anything carbon up there (and cars also avoided it).
However, the whole climb has been resurfaced with silky smooth tarmac (you almost think you're in France) and now is the nicest climb out of Aldbourne. It is a very quiet lane (probably because most people don't know it's been resurfaced) and gives wonderful views back over to the Albourne valley.

Road cycling

As per previous comment, very quiet well surfaced and despite ridibg it in autumn, didn't have too much crap on it. It is deceptively steep in places but nothing ypu can't manage, it just feels harder than the gradient looks. Keep pushing through the steep part, as it levels off, look yo your right for great views.
