There used to be three mills in Rodenberg: Burgmühle, Maschmühle and a town-owned watermill. However, this was destroyed in 1729 by a flood. After 120 years, the city council of Rodenberg decided to build a city-owned windmill on the old Rodenberg. In 1850 the construction of a Erdholländer was started.
At the end of January 1851, the mill was handed over and leased to a master baker. However, after a year the tenant found that there were nine mills within a 1.5 hour radius, which is why his income remained low. The operation also proved to be defective for technical reasons. In August 1852 the mill was built 10 feet higher. In 1853 the town sold the mill to the tannery owner Ludwig Pomy.
In 1885 it was sold again, this time to the miller Heinrich Krone, who set up an inn in the house next to the mill, which became a popular destination for excursions above the town. The Krone family operated the mill until 1916. Since then, the wings have stood still. The grinder was expanded and sold to the miller in Wichtringhausen.
Since 1977, the "windmill interest group" has been trying to preserve the Rodenberg landmark. After a hurricane-like wind destroyed the blades in 1990 and new, stronger blades were installed in 1992, the mill cap burned down in 2005 during renovation work.
In 2006, the IG Windmühle acquired the building in order to be able to repair the fire damage as an association with subsidies. In 2008, a new mill cap was put on and the wings were reinstalled. The city then took over the windmill and in 2014 the wooden interior was renovated and partially renewed.

Since the city's anniversary in 2015, the wings of Rodenberg's landmark have been illuminated and radiate far into the Schaumburg area.
