The Hahnenmoor has existed here since the last Ice Age. For many centuries peat was extracted here to be used as heating material. At the same time, areas were drained and worked with fire to plant buckwheat and keep sheep. In the 1950s, peat cutting was industrialized and large quantities extracted. Fortunately, the protection of the area is now also in the foreground in the Hahnenmoor, because bogs are huge CO2 stores. With the protection, many migratory birds also come to the moor and the characteristic moor plants can be found there.

Pleasantly soft natural paths through a beautiful moor landscape.

In this high moor area, peat has been extracted as heating material for centuries.
The Hahnenmoor is a nature reserve of around 620 hectares between Herzlake in Emsland and Grafeld in Osnabrücker Land.
It is a fascinating landscape and from the observation tower you have a wonderful view over the moor landscape.
