The contact zone of two large continental floes near Windischeschenbach north of Weiden was drilled with the largest land drilling rig in the world. The most diverse investigations were made possible by the pilot bore (4000.1 m) sunk from September 1987 to April 1989 and the main bore 200 m away from October 6, 1990 to October 12, 1994 (9101 m); the KTB was the first major German geoscientific project Basic research.
