"Mons regalis", in German "Königsberg" was first mentioned in a document in 1229. At that time, Count Philipp von Virneburg transferred ownership of the region around Monreal to his brother Hermann. He immediately began building the large castle and fortifying the "Kunigsberg" area with thick walls and gates. Monreal received city rights as early as 1306, market rights only followed in 1642. According to the fashion of the time, the French name "Monsroyal" (= Königsberg) was used. Later it became the current name "Monreal".
The town with its two castles was first destroyed in 1632 by Swedish troops and later again in 1689 by French troops.
