In September 1944 the area of Madonna dell’Olivo, San Tomaso, Monte Leone was occupied by the 278th Infantry Division commanded by General Hoppe. Numerous weapons were stolen from the Division's depot. On 26 September the gendarmerie attached to the division arrested the residents of the houses near the depot and subjected them to "interrogations".
All were then released, all but six men interrogated directly by General Hoppe. After the interrogation of the six men nothing was known until 11 January 1945 when the farmer Bruno Antonucci, while working the farm in San Tomaso, found six bodies killed with a blow to the back of the head: Ubaldo Farabegoli, years 19; Dino Piraccini, 44 years old; Amedeo Ridolfi, 25 years; Augusto Ridolfi 48 years; Primo Ridolfi, 53 years old; Armando Vicini, 1930s.
