As with all Upper Harz ponds in the Clausthal-Zellerfeld area, the dam was built as an earthwork, meaning it was filled with earth and rock. The Untere Pfauenteich is a historical dam east of Clausthal-Zellerfeld. It was created in connection with the Upper Harz water shelf by Upper Harz miners in the 16th or 17th century. Today it still has a function as a flood protection pond for the town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld. Like all structures of the Upper Harz water shelf, the Untere Pfauenteich has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rammelsberg mine, Goslar old town and Upper Harz water management system since 2010.

The pond is located on the south-eastern outskirts of Clausthal. The dam is the fourth pond from above in the so-called "Peacock Pond Cascade". Above is the Middle Peacock Pond, the Upper Peacock Pond and the Hirschler Pond. Furthermore, further below in the bypass is the Eulenspiegler pond and finally, about 10 kilometers further north-west, the Innerste dam.
