Arenfels Castle is beautifully and idyllically situated in the middle of vineyards and has been Bad Hönningen's most important landmark since it was built.
The castle was built in 1259 by Gerlach von Isenburg as a castle directly on a rock. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle was converted into a three-winged palace. After the Congress of Vienna, the heavily indebted Arenfels was left to Prince von der Leyen. He retreated there and during this time the castle began to steadily decay. Things started to improve again from 1848, when the Westerholt family acquired Arenfels Castle. The count commissioned none other than the famous architect Zwirner to carry out a gigantic renovation that turned the Renaissance castle into a neo-Gothic building. This renovation lasted from 1849 to 1855.
