These cobblestone roads are made of boulders that emerged during the reclamation of the moors.
Originally built for the rapid removal of (sawn) wood from forestry so that people did not have to drive on difficult dirt roads.
There are also many maintenance-free cobbled roads in Drenthe hidden in the woods.
