In 1862, the third oil drilling in Germany was completed in Oelheim. In 1881, at the "Im Moor 3" hole, a sandstone layer was encountered, from which the oil shot with enormous force far beyond the spire. Life in Oelheim was booming, oil fever broke out and Oelheim was already partially called "New Pennsylvania".
Theerkuhlen, Kniekuhlen, Queller and Salzsteine: Around Oelheim there is a whole lot to discover, nature and local history in the form of "Professor Soleum's Diary" and a "Späherbuch" imaginatively processed. This story was recorded in "Professor Soleum" in his diary for children, adolescents and adults who are young at heart. The information booklet, including the "Späherbuch", is available at the town hall in Edemissen. So equipped, and with sturdy shoes and a soft pencil, the explorer tour can begin. For a break on the Blackwater Bridge, the derrick or the oil pump, it is also advisable to have a picnic basket or rucksacks with food. The tour starts in Oelheim and returns via Klein Oedesse and Oedesse back to the starting point.
