Santa Maria di Cesano is a medieval complex consisting of a church dedicated to the Madonna del Popolo and what remains of a Benedictine monastery, founded here following the donation of the church to the Benedictine monastery of San Lorenzo di Aversa in 1092. In 1223 the emperor Frederick II of Swabia with his diploma confirmed to the Benedictine monks who had settled in Cesano the legitimate possession of the church and of all the goods already donated to them.

It probably dates back to 1500 ˗ Puglia became the scene of wars ˗ the abandonment by the Benedictine monks of Cesano who became part of the ecclesiastical benefits of papal collation. A period of neglect and decline began for the church.
