According to tradition, 750 years ago, an image of the Virgin Mary was found in Algemesí, which was kept in one of the chapels of the only religious building that existed in the town at that time. The current chapel of the Virgin Mary, now located at the foot of the parish church of Sant Jaume, was the first place where the image rested. At that time, the current minor basilica was not built and only a nave with a wooden roof had been built, which is now dedicated to the patron saint.
