The wetland S'Albufera on Mallorca was declared a nature reserve on January 28, 1988 (Decree 4/1988). In addition, S'Albufera is a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention and, as a Bird Sanctuary (SPA) and Special Protection Area (SAC), is part of the EU's Natura 2000 network.S'Albufera is the largest and most important wetland of the Balearic Islands with its 1,646.48 hectares. It is located in the municipality of Muro and Sa Pobla and consists mainly of reeds and march. Its origins go back to antiquity, but extent and characteristics have varied per sea level. Although parts of the grassland are still from the Tertiary, today's wetland originated less than 100,000 years ago. The dunes bordering the sea are more recent and about 10,000 years old.
