The original name of Torriana was "Castrum Scortigatae" (Scorticated), as we find it in the chronicles starting as early as 1141, this name perfectly described the harshness of a place perched on a rock outcrop almost completely devoid of vegetation.
The name Scorticata was changed to Torriana by Benito Mussolini in 1938, who also moved the town to the foot of the hill where the castle and the ancient village of medieval origin once stood.
    ...
In medieval times a fortress was built on the largest cliff which merged with the stone itself and on the other peak a watchtower (hence the name Torriana).
It was certainly an important fortress guarding the ancient "Via Maior" (the road that went up the Valmarecchia), of great military importance since it represented the main connection with Montefeltro and Tuscany.
The strategic position allowed control of the surrounding territory, allowing sightings and reports to the guard points and to the opposite Verucchio with which it acted as a barrier against the enemies.
