There was originally a red wooden cross at this point, which, according to local researchers, served as a route marker. The "Red Marterl" in the Sternwald was a signpost on the former footpath to the neighboring town of Kapellen in Bohemia. The wooden cross was replaced in 1902 by a granite pillar shrine. In 1992 the Marterl was renovated and decorated with new pictures painted by Father Petrus Mittermüllner, pastor in Vorderweißenbach.
