The Barthe Monastery desert in the Heseler Forest is definitely worth the short hike. When looking at the old building outlines, you can get a glimpse of monastic life in East Frisia from the time before the Reformation, as no stone remained unturned in the old monastery complexes afterwards.

In view of the radicality with which evidence of Catholic life in East Frisia was destroyed at the time, we not only understand a little more about human nature, but also about the need for tolerance towards different lifestyles and cultures. Only the Johanniter Chapel in Bokelesch (between Idafehn and Elisabethfehn) survived the culture war in Frisian as a monastic complex. By the way, the Heseler Forest is also a good place to simply enjoy the beautiful nature of the forest.

Two kilometers beyond Hesel is an old monastery in the forest

From the parking lot, on the left hand, it is easy to find.

The old walls have been made visible with hedges again.

So you get an idea about the size of the old monastery.

The monastery was founded between 1170 and 1184.

It was probably a convent, which dissolved after the Reformation.

The monastery became the property of the East Frisian counts who were hunting here.

In the 1600th century the monastery was leased.

In 1632 the monastery was demolished.

The monastery, which was demolished in the Middle Ages, has been beautifully re-sketched by the planted hedges.
