After Tornio was granted city rights in 1621, the city's first church was consecrated in 1647. However, it burned down in 1682 after being struck by lightning. Two years later, construction began on a new church a few hundred meters northwest of the site of the old church. On July 11, 1686, the new church was consecrated and named after the then Queen of Sweden, Hedwig Eleonora. The free-standing bell tower was built in 1686-1687.In 1736/37, the Frenchman Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis used the church tower of Tornio as a measuring point for his measurements to determine the size and shape of the earth.Wikipedia
