There is a small war memorial here. Every May 4, Remembrance Day takes place here and TAVENU plays. After the two minutes of silence, the flags of the Allies will be raised. One of them is still the flag of the former Soviet Union, with hammer and sickle. It shows how great the influence of the Dutch Communist Party was in this neighborhood. The monument was designed by architect G.A. Roobol, who once lived at the Zaanhof, consists of a wave of bricks. It therefore fits in well with the Amsterdam School buildings in the area.
Pay close attention to the sayings above the gates in this square. One of the sayings refers to the Housing Act that was passed in parliament in 1901 and made it possible for large-scale social housing for workers to be built in Amsterdam.
