The castle's origins date back to 1085. Initially the castle consisted of a residential tower that stood on a motte. It once had 5 floors and a height of over 24 meters. The palace and keep were built around 1170. With them, the complex was expanded into an imperial castle. The town was born with the construction of the first houses outside the castle complex. The first houses were mainly occupied by castle men who were settled for protection. In 1255 the palace was enlarged after the Hagen-Münzenberg family and thus the former owners died out. The castle was expanded under the Lords of Falkenstein. The palace will be integrated into the defensive wall. A church, a school, more Burgmannen houses and a gate tower were built, which was intended to make access more difficult. The city is constantly growing. In 1418 the last Falkensteiner died. The castle is divided between the lords of Isenburg, Sayn and Hanau. In 1425 the lords concluded a truce and shared the complex. A few years later, in 1460, the city received another exit to the east, as well as the lower gate. Both paths are protected with ditches on both sides. Bulwarks were also installed.

In 1486 the complex was expanded to its largest known form. The Lords of Isenburg buy their share from the Lords of Sayn and expand the castle with the Lords of Hanau. The palace was restored in 1938.
