The Basilica of Santa María is located in the place that in Muslim times was occupied by the main mosque. After the conquest of the city by Jaume I in 1265, the mosque remained standing until 1334 and, on top of it, a first Catholic temple was built, probably in the Gothic style and with a cross plan, which would survive until 1492.

The Basilica of Santa María or Iglesia Arciprestal de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a Catholic temple located in the Plaza del Congreso Eucharistic in Elche, built in the Baroque style between 1672 and 1784. It is a good example of the Spanish Baroque.
This building presents different architectural styles, from the Italian Baroque of the main entrance, the rococo of the other doorways and the ambulatory, the neoclassical interior, to medieval memories.
