Ineia is believed to derive from the Latin "Vinea Engadi", a vineyard that belonged to the Hospitallers who acquired it from the Knights Templar. Commandaria was grown in the local vineyards.

The name Ineia originally derives from the word "οίνος", which means "wine" in the ancient Greek language, and is referred to as "wine" in historical sources, with the spelling of the place name gradually changing over time and the took today's form.
