This impressive statue of a bull stands at the entrance to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. It is symbolic of the bullfights that take place in the Saintes-Maries arena in the summer months. These bullfights are both bloody (Spanish tradition) and bloodless (Course Camarguais). Around the bullfights, the bulls are driven through the streets of the old town during an "Abreviado".

Saintes-Maries is particularly famous as a Marian pilgrimage site and place of pilgrimage for the Gitanes to their patron saint, the "Black Sarah", whose bones are said to rest in the crypt of the fortified church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer. For the great Gitanes pilgrimage in May, a colorfully decorated figurine of Black Sarah is carried to the sea in a cheerful procession

The Camargue bulls are famous for their fighting spirit. The Camargue horse is a small, robust horse that is bred semi-wild primarily in the Camargue and is used, among other things, for bull driving.
