The Phyllis Wheatley YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association), founded in 1905 by African-American women and named for Phyllis Wheatley, an enslaved woman and famous poet in 19th-century America Rhode Island Avenue.
For more than 100 years, the dedicated women of the YWCA have provided Shaw neighborhood residents with educational programs, housing, jobs, recreation, and community services such as: B. A feeding program for underprivileged children.
