If you hike the Pacific Crest Trail and are the proud owner of a Long distance permit, this gives you permission to climb the highest mountain – Mount Whitney – in the contiguous US in one day's hike. Your base camp is the area west of Crabtree Ranger Station, because the permit does not allow you to camp east of it.
