The Royal Palace of Portici, a Bourbon summer residence built from 1738 at the behest of Charles of Bourbon and Maria Amalia of Saxony, is a magnificent example of 18th-century architecture between Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples. Today it houses the Department of Agriculture of the Federico II University, the MUSA (Museums of Agricultural Sciences) and the Botanical Garden.
