Teatro Politeama / Politeama Theater, Catanzaro
The youngest of the great Italian theaters. His fresh and exhilarating experience has its roots in the city's old theater tradition, which he had in the Teatro Real Francesco, then teatro Comunale, his beating heart, which had been thrown from the demolition pick in the first months of 1938 after 108 years. In this respect, the architect has to stick to the tradition of classical Italian theater. And so the ground floor, which contains seating arrangements for 380 spectators, follows an undulating movement on an almost concative surface. Along the curved line of the hall you overlook the five tiers of boxes adorned with seven-pointed stars (this is also a musical symbol) and which can accommodate an additional 550 spectators. The stage with its size and its technological equipment enables the development of different entertainment genres, from grand opera to symphony, from dance to operetta, from prose to musical. An artistic fountain designed by Portoghesi himself was set up in the entrance square.
