Chiesa di San Rocco / Church of San Rocco Girifalco

Distant foundation, sixteenth century, it is one of the oldest monuments of Girifalco. Located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, it is a real gem of baroque architecture. It was built, according to legend, after the discovery of an image of the saint among the bushes of a swamp on the spot where the church was later built. It has been restored several times throughout history and in fact the old church, which was of larger proportions, was rebuilt in 1666 after the severe damage suffered by an earthquake in the same century. In 1672 she was raised to a parish. It withstood the 1783 earthquake that devastated much of the country and did not undergo major changes until 1860. On the facade there are four pillars with capitals and on the left the bell tower has a clock on top. The interior houses various works of great value, including a baroque monstrance, the high altar by stonemasons by Serra San Bruno, the altar by San Michele Arcangelo, who was the ancient patron saint of the country, and the beautiful statue of San Rocco, a very valuable work of art made of solid wood from that period of artistic heyday, which was the sixteenth century.
