The Girifalco madhouse, known as the Complesso monumentale, was the third mental asylum in the south after that of Palermo and Aversa to convert declared persons.
Until the time of its closure, the institution housed numerous patients suffering from various diseases, from many parts of Italy and even abroad. The repressive effects of everyday life in the institution often inspired the inmates to be creative and artistic. So today there are numerous poems or paintings as a direct expression of the everyday life suffered.
