The main canal carried water from the Amadora area to Lisbon.
It connected to reservoirs such as the Reservatório da Mãe d’Água das Amoreiras (Amoreiras Water Reservoir), which is open to visitors today.
It distributed water to more than 30 public fountains throughout the city.
