1831 June 19 in the battles of Panerii, the rebels of General Antanas Gelgaudas lost to the units of the Russian Empire army that managed to regroup. The central positions of the Russian army, four battalions under the command of D. Osten-Saken, were located near the surviving chapel of the cemetery. The units of Antanas Gelgaudas (about 12,600 rebels), slowly marching towards Vilnius, were stopped by the army sent by the governor-general in the Battle of Paneri.

After an unsuccessful attempt to capture Vilnius, the rebels retreated to Raseinii, later tried to capture Šiauliai, but also unsuccessfully, then retreated to Kuršėni, from where they split into several parts and there was no longer any substantial resistance.

Antanas Gelgaudas - 1831 leader of the rebellion in Lithuania. in 1830 led the units of the Polish rebels, was appointed the commander-in-chief of the rebels. in 1831 formed the Provisional Polish Central Government in Lithuania. The army led by him attacked the Russian army and took Kaunas, but lost the battles at Paneri, Šiauliai and was forced to retreat. On the Prussian border, A. Gelgaudas was killed by a disillusioned rebel officer.

2001 June 6 in memory of the dead rebels, a monument was built near the chapel of the Paneriai cemetery in memory of the dead rebels.
