The via dei Cavalleggeri is a route that dates back to the 1500s and which allowed soldiers to monitor the coastal stretch that goes from Piombino to Livorno.
At the end of the 18th century it became a royal road and in the Napoleonic era an attempt was made to make it suitable for vehicles but the area of the Piombino promontory, due to its characteristics, could not become a suitable route for the transit of vehicles.
Thus the project was abandoned and is now accessible on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike.
