Mozarabic fortress built in the 8th century and was of great importance in the Middle Ages. It was conquered by Abd-el-Rahman III in 913 to crush the revolt of Omar Ben Hafsun. During the rebellion of the Moors in the year 1500, Ferdinand the Catholic reconquered it and destroyed it to prevent new rebellions. In 1572 it was repopulated with Christian settlers from Castile.
