The previous church, dating from the 11th century and remodeled in the 13th century, was ruined during the wars of religion from 1585 to 1622. Restored in the 17th century, it disappeared in 1883.
The current sanctuary, in an ogival Romanesque style, was built from 1883 on the same site. The current church measures 37 meters in length, 8 meters in width and 12 meters in height under the keystone, with a bell tower which rises to 32 meters in height.
The side chapels are dedicated, the one on the right to Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire, the one on the left to the Sacred Heart.
In the transept, to the right, is an altar placed under the invocation of Our Lady of the Sources. It comes, as well as the high altar, from the minor seminary of Montlieu. Both were rebuilt here in 1912.
The wooden altar in the Chapel of the Virgin dates from 1842. It comes from the old church.
The church contains several ex-votos, including two magnificent models of ships established on either side of the high altar. These represent merchant ships probably dating from the Second Empire, very well preserved and of unparalleled beauty, which should delight enthusiasts.
The vitals of the sanctuary and the side chapels date from 1884. Those of the transept and the nave were installed in 1925 and 1929.
The bell tower, 32 meters high, contains 4 bells:
Madeleine, melted in 1738, listed as a historic monument, 170 K, rings C sharp. Blessed in 1749, she comes from the old church.
Valentine - Françoise, 270 K, rings the sharp.
Marie, Queen of Peace, 400 K, strikes the G sharp.
Louise - Gabrielle - Charlotte, 548 K, rings F sharp.
The church is dedicated to Saint Gaudence, bishop of Rimini in Italy, martyred in 360. He had defended the divinity of Christ against Arianism. His feast is celebrated on October 14.
On the territory of the parish, near the south beach, there is an ordeal in memory of the martyred priests of the pontoons buried at Fort la Pointe during the revolution.
