The Kocatepe Mosque is the largest mosque in the Turkish capital, Ankara. Construction began in 1967 and was completed in 1987. Due to its size and prominent location in the Kocatepe district, it is visible from almost all of central Ankara.
Architecture and interior:
Architects Hüsrev Tayla and M. Fatin Uluengin designed the mosque in a neoclassical Ottoman style, inspired by 16th-century mosques such as the Blue Mosque and the Selimiye Mosque.
The mosque is remarkably large and has four minarets, each 88 meters high.
The interior is richly decorated with an ornamental ceiling, a large gold chandelier, and marble details, giving it a stately appearance.
Visitor information:
The mosque is generally open to visitors outside prayer times.
Visitors are required to dress respectfully and remove their shoes at the entrance. Below the mosque there is a large department store called Beğendik.
