Convent of San Pancrazio in Barbarano Mossano
The origin of the Convent of San Pancrazio dates back to the year 1501 when it was built at the behest of the local community on the top of the hill, where a previous church stood.
San Pancrazio met several eminent Franciscans including the venerable Antonio Pagani who lived here for the last three years of his life, from 1586 to 1589.
In 1769, the Venetian Republic decreed its suppression due to the scarcity of conventual presences and it was thus used as a parish church.
In 1834, with the return of the Friars, it was reopened, and after several structural interventions (already begun in 1600) it was enlarged and restored; a small cemetery was added for the conventuals and the Via Crucis, made up of 14 frescoed capitals.
The arched cloister and the well from the sixteenth century are very impressive, while inside the church there is a terracotta sculpture depicting the Virgin and Child, a valuable work of the late fifteenth century.
The Franciscan Community was dissolved again in 1866 by order of the new Kingdom of Italy. Later, in 1897, the Friars were able to return and from 1927 the Franciscan Community regained the Convent, which had previously belonged to the Municipality of Barbarano Vicentino.
The Friars of San Pancrazio still offer tourists, visitors and faithful the possibility of staying for spiritual purposes inside the Convent.
