In a broader sense, the Via Francigena, also known as the Franconian Road or Franconian Way, refers to the old highways that pilgrims used on their way from the Frankish Empire or from England across the territory of the Frankish Empire to Rome to the burial site of the apostles Peter and Paul. The name Via Romea is often used to refer to the destination.
Today's reconstruction of the Via Francigena is essentially based on information from Archbishop Sigeric of Canterbury, who made a pilgrimage to Rome in 990.

There are two variants on the board: to the left is the shorter route, to the right is the longer route.
