The middle Rottal was settled long before 812.
Neolithic finds were found in the municipality.
The oldest traces of settled people near Birnbach
date from the Bronze Age (around 1800 - 1200 BC)
and from the early Iron Age ("Hallstatt Period", around 750 - 400 BC).
The Hallstatt culture was borne by the Celts.
Near Aunham is the barrow field at the "Aunhamer Spitz",
that with at least 114 burials
is one of the largest in Lower Bavaria.
