The Leitenbach rises on the south-eastern slopes of the Sauwald forest and initially flows with a high gradient in a south-easterly direction until it reaches a wide, flat plateau below the village of Landertsberg, which it crosses with a very low gradient. Then it flows through the Leithental, a steep breakthrough valley around 2.5 km in length.
