Here on June 3, 1773, Johann Adam Hasenstab (J A H St) from Rothenbuch, the ore poacher of the Spessart, was ambushed by the district hunter Johann Sator and shot "in self-defense". Hasenstab was buried in the cemetery in Breitenbrunn. Friends and admirers later donated this cross. To this day there are quite different opinions in the Spessart as to whether Hasenstab was a Robin Hood ("an honorable fighter against the authorities") or the criminal leader of a gang of poachers, or both.
