The Oosterschelde is a branch of the river Scheldt. Until the Middle Ages, this river was not nearly as big. By silting, ditching and the construction of dikes, the Oosterschelde has reached its present size. Due to the tides and the fresh and salt water thousands of plant, bird and animal species live in and on the Oosterschelde.
Since 2002 the Oosterschelde is a national park. This means that nature is protected and the state recognizes nature as something important. National Parks - wherever in the world - are the most beautiful and valuable natural areas. In the Netherlands there are 20 national parks, of which the Oosterschelde is the largest.
