The chain of ponds includes nine individual ponds, which together cover an area of around 3.5 hectares. In the course of the construction of the Nuremberg–Ingolstadt high-speed line to the east through the Nuremberg Reichswald, the former fish ponds were renatured and ecologically upgraded. In 2013, Deutsche Bahn had to redesign the existing water areas and their overgrown surroundings in a natural way to compensate for the land use.
