Both the cycling and hiking trails run along here and it is definitely worth taking the time to do some bird watching, even if you are not an expert.

A small bridge leads cyclists and hikers between Mittelsee and Spyker See, and two bays with benches invite you to take a short break and enjoy the view. The views on all sides are worthwhile and very idyllic.

The Spyckerscher See and Mittelsee nature reserve is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. With the two lakes mentioned and the adjacent shore and shallow water areas, it covers an area of 354 hectares, of which 177 hectares are water!
It was designated on November 5, 1990, with an extension in 1994.
The purpose of the protection is to preserve a very scenic section of the North Rügen Bodden landscape, which is a habitat for numerous animal and plant species.
The areas border directly on the Great Jasmund Bodden.
The nature reserve is protected under EU law as part of the FFH area North Rügen Bodden landscape and the bird sanctuary Inland Bodden of Rügen!
The nature reserve is in good condition due to the discontinued uses. Disturbances are caused by anglers and surfers. The areas are owned by the state's environmental and nature conservation foundation.
A hiking trail leads through the area.

There are numerous habitats in the nature reserve. The range of biotopes extends from pioneer vegetation and semi-dry grassland with development into heat-loving bushes on the one hand and sandy grassland in the area close to the ground on the other, through abandoned salt marshes and various reed beds and alder quarries to the shallow waters of the two lakes and the adjacent Bodden area.
Species that are particularly protected, threatened with extinction and rare for Rügen include
kingfisher, adder, grass snake, blackbird, barred warbler, water frog, carnation, dyer's shad, upright brome and sickle carrot.
Buzzards, red kites, marsh harriers and ospreys hunt in the area and various species of geese and cranes rest here.
The lakes are important spawning grounds for perch, rudd, tench, pike and bream. They are also a habitat for eel, flounder and ruffe.
