The 78 ha (another indication is 82 ha with reference to the last cemetery extension from 1939) large southern cemetery is the largest cemetery in Leipzig. It was designed by the city planning officer and architect Hugo Licht (*1841; †1923) and the garden director Otto Wittenberg (*1834; †1918). The paths are laid out in the shape of a linden leaf in order to create a reference to Leipzig's original Sorbian name: the Sorbian word Lipsk means "linden tree place" or "the place where the linden trees stand".

In 1877 the Parkfriedhof Hamburg-Ohlsdorf was opened. Planning for the Leipzig South Cemetery — also a park cemetery — began in 1879. It was opened on June 1, 1886. Similar to Hamburg, it was initially accepted only hesitantly by the citizens.
