It was designed by the city planning officer and architect Hugo Licht (*1841; †1923) and the garden director Otto Wittenberg (*1834; †1918). The paths are laid out in the shape of a linden leaf in order to create a reference to Leipzig's original Sorbian name: the Sorbian word Lipsk means "linden tree place" or "the place where the linden trees stand".

In 1877 the Parkfriedhof Hamburg-Ohlsdorf was opened. Planning for the Leipzig South Cemetery — also a park cemetery — began in 1879. It was opened on June 1, 1886. Similar to Hamburg, it was initially accepted only hesitantly by the citizens.
