"Here...Where the earth ends and the sea begins...". Luís de Camões' famous words about Cabo da Roca are immortalized on the base of a huge monument that sits on the headland. Many people used to think of Cabo da Roca as the end of the world. The cape was of strategic importance. The westernmost point of Europe had to be passed by all ships traveling back and forth between the Mediterranean and the seas of western and northern Europe. Nothing has changed to this day.

The rock face of the cape rises 140 meters above the sea. An impressive panorama opens up from the top of Cabo da Roca. On both sides there are 100 meter high steep walls stretching for kilometers. Rugged rock formations extend into the blue sea like the mighty defensive structures of a fortress. On stormy days, huge waves break there while the white spray tries in vain to overcome the rock face. Over time, this constant battle between sea and land has left visible erosion, which contributes to the characteristic shape of Cabo da Roca. Occasionally the cliffs and rock formations are broken by small sandy beaches.
