In the night of December 22 to 23, 1942, a Halifax bomber flew over the municipality of Staphorst. He was shelled from all sides by the Germans. The plane eventually crashed in the IJhorsterveld. Six of the eight crew members were killed. They are buried next to the church in IJhorst.
The memorial is located where the plane crashed.
