The Oostvaardersveld was created in 1968 after the Flevopolder was drained. The area is approximately 300 hectares and is located to the north east of the Oostvaardersplassen, sandwiched between the Almere-Lelystad and Lage Vaart railway line. After the land reclamation, the area was briefly in agricultural use. It soon became apparent that it was unprofitable agricultural land and it was quickly returned to nature.
