The San José Desert was founded in 1599 by Fr. Tomás de Jesús, at that time Provincial Superior of the Discalced Carmelites of Castile. The monastery was built deep in the Batuecas Valley, a true natural paradise surrounded by rivers, forests and high mountains. The intricacy of the valley and its beauty caused it to be surrounded by legends since ancient times, which contributed to increasing the mystery that it already had.
