The Main-Danube Canal connects the Main and the Danube, as does the historic Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal, which has only been preserved in fragments. The new canal thus represents an efficient transport connection between the conurbations on the Rhine and those in the Danube region.
The artificial waterway overcomes the elevations of the Franconian Alb from Bamberg via Nuremberg to the confluence with the Danube in Kelheim. These differences in height are gradually overcome with the help of locks. When the lock chamber is emptied, 60% of the water is diverted into the terraced storage tanks of the Dietfurt lock to the side of the lock chamber. The water stored there is then used to fill the lock chamber when the lock is opened again. The remaining fill in the lock chamber is taken from the higher-lying canal section. Pumping stations on the south ramp of the canal ensure a constant water level in the canal.urlaub-im-altmuehltal.de/stadt-dietfurt/schleuse.htm

Every lock is a real technical miracle!
And the fine work of the captains who juggle their freighter into the lock with precision work!
Always wonderful to watch it!
