Steinau Castle, of which the square stump of the 13th-century keep has been preserved, served as a fortification for safe passage on the Via Regia. The castle was later expanded into a palace.
In the immediate vicinity is the Brothers Grimm House, where the Grimms spent their childhood.

Steinau Castle, the former country seat of the Counts of Hanau, was built between 1525 and 1560. Some documents even point to a start of construction as early as 1508.
The construction measures were carried out by the Steinau master stonemason Asmus.
The building forms an irregular pentagon with four (originally five) wings, four front corner buildings (pavilions) and two gatehouses in the north and south. The fifth wing in the south-east was destroyed when the Croats invaded in 1634 and later completely removed, but the foundation walls and ridge stones can still be seen today.
The Renaissance castle is surrounded by a 4-5 m deep and 18-25 m wide moat, the so-called deer moat.

The castle was originally designed as a secondary residence for the Counts of Hanau. The buildings visible today are considered to be one of the best-preserved Renaissance palace complexes in Hesse.
