    Schmachtenberg Castle Ruins

High above the Main Valley, still clearly visible from afar, the ruins of Schmachtenberg Castle tower over the Main Valley. Hikers like to come to the castle - the route there leads either via the Eselsteig from Ziegelanger or via the Schmachtenberger Steige.

What is special about Schmachtenberg Castle is its layout as a fortified castle: instead of adapting to the terrain, the castle was built as a square with four round towers at the corners. "And that at a time when castle building was practically over," says Ludwig Leisentritt (local historian and honorary citizen of the town of Zeil a.Main). Schmachtenberg Castle was therefore built purely as a symbol of power for the Bishop of Bamberg, serving as his official residence and not as a strategic military center.

Only the inventory documentation carried out between 1995 and 2007 as part of the renovation work, in conjunction with archaeological excavations, was able to clarify the construction history of Schmachtenberg Castle. Thanks to dendrochronological determinations of some of the timbers, it is now certain that the castle was only built in 1420/30, during the Hussite period and parallel to the construction of the Zeil city wall, by the Bishopric of Bamberg. Schmachtenberg Castle should not be confused with the "Castrum Cilanum", which is located on the Kapellenberg.
